A few years ago I gave myself the choice of doing the Liszt Sonata, or Chopin's 3rd, and chose the Liszt. I think I'll go back and do the Chopin sometime soon...it's too good to pass up.

So which is a better piece-the Liszt or the Chopin? (Hint: don't try to answer that question, you would make enemies of half the users on here whichever one you picked.  They're two of the greatest pieces ever composed.)

(With the opposite answer! ) -J It doesn't really mean anything, other than an opinion, but I might as well name drop as I feel ambushed here. Stephen Hough: "The Liszt Sonata is probably the greatest single piano work of the Romantic era – it is a symphony for the piano containing the world. It’s a piece of enormous emotional depth and a great, broad human spirit. I never fail to find it moving." Amen, Steve.

There's no point arguing about it. You will never convince me to be wrong, nor I you to be right. So why not appreciate both as the seminal works they are? I would rather not choose -and fortunately I do have to- which is the greater work. And you can throw in the Schumann Fantasie. I am grateful that we have these magnificently written works for all of us to enjoy and savour, I never tire of them, and cannot be bothered with rating works on such a high level of accomplishment.

But we also know how wrong they (the Liszt fans) are, don't we? And they know how wrong we are, and how right they are, and we know how wrong they are when they think it's right that we're wrong that they're wrong about us not being right... oh, whatever.

They're about different things really, just like how Chopin and Liszt are completely different musicians. One is a story of an introvert, confiding with a friend, each individual listener. The other writes an epic which communicates to the broader audience.
