Anyone know if its possible to get moving insurance for a day. I move a lot of cheaper pianos but when I move a more expensive one I was wondering if anyone has tried getting insurance for just one day and then charging accordingly.

If you have business insurance, it is possible to get an insurance rider for a specified time period to cover you while a client's piano is under your "Custody and Control". This usually applies for a few weeks while the piano is in your shop for repairs. I am not sure if it can be done for a one day move.
If the piano is very expensive (and doesn't belong to you) it may be better to have that one moved my professional licensed, bonded and insured movers. It simply may not be worth the risk....

If you are operating legally, you are probably required to have insurance. What you really need to look into is the amount of the deductible, so that you only use it for the claims you cannot afford yourself. It will also cover you for lawsuits. If you are not operating legally, you may not be able to get anyone to pay you.

I have the client choose their own mover, then I'm out of the equation. If you have other people's property in your possession, whether in your car, or in your shop, or home, you really need to insure it. Most if not all Auto and Home owners policies won't cover it.

You need to be insured even if you only have a client's action in your car. Anything can happen to the piano, to you, to the client's home, etc.

If you do decide to sub moves out make sure whoever it is doesn't operate on the standard HHG insurance of 63 cents a pound coverage. Someone trashes someones C-7 and its a whopping 700 dollar paycheck and this kind of thing happens a LOT.

Thanks for all the responses. Can anyone tell me what insurance companies I might consider for general and/or insurance for moving? Like I may have said, I am usually moving pianos valued under a couple thousand dollars. There is the occasional nice expensive piano though and what I am gathering from these posts is that it may just be a lot better to pass those moves on to an insured moving company.

A good insurance broker can answer your questions. Mine got us insurance when everyone else would not even respond to our phone calls, so I do everything through them. Whenever I get solicitations to change my insurance in the mail, they go straight into the circular file.

The two biggest commercial vehicle insurers in the US are Acuity and Auto-Owners. Auto Owners regularly writes piano related insurance policies. Most others will not due to the extreme damage that can occur to life and limb. You have to find and go through an agent for both of them.

We have a blanket policy that just covers everything in the inventory regardless of age to a specific number. This way I can just retire after the first good Tornado.
