Any ideas what to put in one? I was thinking music pens or pencils, some candy, stickers. Maybe a music bookmark? Just looking for some other ideas.

Wide clips (like the ones for potato chips) to help the book stay open.

How about a kazoo? I use these for students who are too shy to hum or sing the melody line of their piece when working on phrasing... a kazoo gets them involved every time smile

Finger cymbals are always super fun! Piano pencils, binder clips, candy (I know parents aren't super thrilled about candy so I always give very little), mini trophies presented... smile

I want a kazoo!!! Thanks for the suggestion. If I ever have a kid say to me again "Don't sing", I can whip out the kazoo. What fun!!

I love kazoos too! By the way, do your students actually say "Don't sing" to you? I'm imagining a pretentious six year old...

Only one kid said it to me. He was my first young beginner.

It used to annoy me when my teacher sang when I was trying to concentrate on playing, so I asked her to stop and she did. There were no issues.

Yes, it's quite annoying to have someone sing along while you're playing. My dad does that. I'll be playing and he will walk into the room singing (pieces that have no words) and being off a little. He thinks he's showing enthusiasm for a piece by humming or singing as you play. LOL!

In the young beginner situation, it was about getting an overview of a piece, clapping and singing. Kid didn't want to sing, so I did. Now I would just have us say the words in rhythm if he doesn't want to sing. The comment not to sing hasn't happened again in 5 years. But still, the kazoo is on its way thanks to Amazon.
