Mabel's a full upright. She's laid back on a piano dolly in my living room right now and the technician now has her innards and keys at his workshop, so you can see her keybed, harp, and soundboard without all the usual stuff in the way.

She's young still--17 or so--but besides her semiannual tuning, she'd not had any regulation or voicing or bushing replacements since her debut 17 years ago and she was overdue.

The technician noticed a small soundboard crack during his inspection, so she's getting that dealt with too before it becomes a bigger problem.

Cecil de Piano knows how Mabel feels- he had a refurb over a year ago and had all his action and keys taken out for a few weeks and he looked very sad and empty with his only his wooden frame and strings left. But he looked and sounded so much better afterwards and so will Mabel. x

At least there was no drilling or amputations.

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

Mabel's supposed to be back in form on Friday or Saturday--crossing fingers.

Au contraire! The technician took a penknife to Mabel's soundboard so that he could apply some sealant to a small crack. A penknife! Yikes!

No, but it looks like they performed an actionectamy. A little cleaning, or did she need a transplant? What's the prognosis?

Some hammer shaping and voicing, key bushing replacement, and regulation. She was way overdue.

She's back on her feet today, but is still sans action. Monday, perhaps.

My parents' upright could use a similar servicing.. how much did this cost you (shoot me a PM if you don't want to post it)? I'd like to be able to give them a ballpark of what it should cost before they call the tech they know.

Mabel's much better now.

The tech is going to come in soon and ease some of the new key bushings as well as look at a couple of notes whose timbre isn't quite in line with the rest of the keyboard. But overall, Mabel feels and sounds great.

At the risk of being insensitive, how much does this type of surgery and treatment cost? It may become necessary for my upright one day.... You may PM me if you don't want to discuss in public.
