I play once in a while for my local government. I received a phone call today where they're in a bind and need someone to play their national anthem for an awards ceremony. I agreed to play and am doing them a favor - this is a freebie.
It's a matter of me playing two choruses while the mayor of my village performs. To his credit he has an excellent voice and is a nice guy.
I remember once back probably more than 40 years ago in the US where I was in the audience and some poor kid who really didn't know our anthem really butchered it.
It's really in your best interest to be able to play your own national anthem ... and play it with great confidence.
Just passin' this on.

Just passin' this on. Reminds me of my own college graduation requirements back in the 1960's in the US. Every senior music major had to demonstrate "minimum" proficiency on the piano - which included the ability to play a simple arrangement of the national anthem in the key of B flat by memory. It was a struggle for many.

My teacher made me memorize O Canada as well as God Save the Queen at a very young age, and I've never forgotten them. I think I was only called upon to play them once or twice though.
I think O Canada is significantly easier than the Star-Spangled Banner.

I can, but I refuse. Our national anthem is horrible. 
Every day we are afforded a new chance. The problem with life is not that you run out of chances. In the end, what you run out of are days.

I absolutely love the US national anthem. I'm not speaking patriotically-- I'm speaking musically. I love its use of arpeggio (like the Appassionata!), the melodic climax half-way through ("rocket's red glare"), the harmonic buildup under "O say does that star spangled banner" signifying the beginning of the ending.
I think it's a great, daring, bold composition.

I think the US should have changed it to "America the Beautiful" (there are a number of contenders, but I like that one). I'll play Sousa's "Stars and Stripes" before I go near the National Anthem...

Nope, but then people in the UK don't really care much about the national anthem these days. It doesn't help that it's musically speaking one of the dullest.

It doesn't help that it's musically speaking one of the dullest. But Beethoven wrote a nifty set of variations on it.

An old friend of mine, Joe DeMers, would play a shortened version of The Star Spangled Banner when time was of the essence ... link to MID file That would always make me laugh.
