Why do some people think they can solve problems with violence?

The marathoners and people of Boston are in my prayers.

I don't necessarily think they're thinking of solving problems. I do not understand the extent to which minds are deranged where they can do such things, however.

I thought the following note by comedian and actor Patton Oswalt was good.

Quote
The Good Outnumber You And We Always Will

Boston. F***ing horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."

But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem -- one human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in a while, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evildoers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

Jesus Christ... Before going to bed I did see various people talking about Boston but I had no idea on what happened. Only now (morning) I had a look at a news site and... wow...

If there's anyone from Boston here: stay safe and keep your loved ones safe. I don't understand it at all!

All very interesting in that last September when I visited Boston, I walked down that same section of Boylston Street, no mistaking that...

Very sad news today.

My uncle would have run in the Boston marathon, but he's recently injured himself, so he can't run for nearly as long distances for a little while.. Wow.

The Patton Oswald quote is really great.

It is a thought, much needed, to boost the courage of those dealing with the aftermath of such a horrific event.

My heartfelt prayers to all who are touched by this terrible event...and really, aren't we ALL touched by it in some way?

Yes it is.
My thoughts go to the people in Boston as well.

@Admins: There is another Boston Marathon related thread in the Digital Piano forum. Maybe those threads could be united under the "9/11"-Forum, which deals with terrorism in America? Just a thought.

Same here. I lived near Boston for nine years. My Saturday shopping took me from Tower Records on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue & Newbury Street, then to Boylston Street via Gloucester Street. I would then stop at Glad Day Bookstore (now closed) which was almost exactly where the first blast hit.

It was at the Boston Public Library, across the street from the first blast site, where I first heard Rachmaninoff's own recordings of his piano concertos.

I have two friends who ran in the marathon yesterday. Fortunately, they were uninjured.

Yesterday, after the explosions, Boston's Finest and ordinary citizens rushed in to provide assistance and comfort. That is the Boston spirit.

The composers want performers be imaginative, in the direction of their thinking--not just robots, who execute orders.

Boston will rebound from this tragic incident, just like New York did. That is indeed the Boston spirit. My heart goes out to all affected by this awful event.

I feel so sorry for everybody. I unfortunately grew up in Italy during the "years of lead"... a dark page of Italian history while we were constantly hit by left and right wing extremist. I was a baby and than a kid... one of my "earliest" memory is the kidnapping and assassination of Aldo Moro.. I was 3 at that time but I still remember the "greyness" that I did breath.
I'm very sorry for the people being hit by this insanity and for all the kids that will grow with this horrible memory.
The US will prevail, as freedom and life always find a way to overcome destruction.

My wife had an appointment yesterday at Mass General for some tests that would take a couple of hours. She suggested that I take the kids to watch the Marathon while she was having the tests done. My kids thought that would be boring and said they wanted to go to the Museum of Science. But for the grace of God...

Most of the people around here are pretty shaken but they will soon get over this. It gives me hope for humanity that events such as this tend to build a stronger sense of community among the people.

A relevant poem.

Quote
The Diameter Of The Bomb
Yehuda Amichai

The diameter of the bomb was thirty centimeters
and the diameter of its effective range about seven meters,
with four dead and eleven wounded.
And around these, in a larger circle
of pain and time, two hospitals are scattered
and one graveyard. But the young woman
who was buried in the city she came from,
at a distance of more than a hundred kilometers,
enlarges the circle considerably,
and the solitary man mourning her death
at the distant shores of a country far across the sea
includes the entire world in the circle.
And I won’t even mention the crying of orphans
that reaches up to the throne of God and
beyond, making a circle with no end and no God.
