Hi, fnork! Like the other "reviewer", I have little previous exposure to the piece to recommend any specific technical improvements. However, I have two more general reactions:

You seem to be presenting this material (and I agree) as a "Grand Waltz", in the manner of a Godowsky or Schulz-Evler transcription. The typical Debussyan interruptions, however, are for my taste somewhat too percussive and abrupt -- I hear this somewhat more lyrically, and would even descend to a touch of "schmalz" in the overall presentation.

Also, in the "B" section (albeit again with interruptions), I'd like a little more explicit contrast, and again with "softer hands" than I heard here. The conclusion does in fact end so abruptly that I think this entire etude is another example of Debussy's dry humor -- an affectionate send-up of "the grand gesture" -- but with a straight face!

The best of luck to you in the audition! You play marvellously well, and are very adventurous in your choice of repertoire -- most appreciated!

thanks for the comments, much appreciated! yes indeed, as someone pointed out (maybe it was Paul Roberts, in his excellent book on Debussy's piano music) then this is somehow a stylized waltz in the manner of Chabrier and others, and it should be treated waltz-like, somehow. All in all it is fairly complex however! Debussy plays around with the rhythm so much, especially with the idea that any piece in 3 is just an irregular 2, as one often has 2 accentuated beats in a bar, rather than just one (although certain sections of the piece are totally different again - the middle part with 16th triplets should more or less float and be free from accents, as long as the phrase-length is clear). In a piece of this kind, one would almost expect a downbeat in the second bar, and instead, the strongest beat of that bar is....an empty rest. The effect is that the listener doesn't necessarily get that it's in 3/8 until after the 4th bar, or even later. In any case, I want to stay out of any percussiveness or violent abruptness - I'll blame a tiny bit on the small practicing room and the piano, with its hard touch, but the rest is my own fault. So many layers of difficulties in these pieces!
