Hi,

I am looking to buy a piano for my young family. I looked at and liked an 11 year old Kawai K-50E piano. It is in immaculate condition. The seller paid $5300 for it new. It looks like it has never been used. I have been advised to offer $3500. How much is it worth? Thanks.

Does never used mean never serviced? Those are good instruments, but on any private sale, a tech inspection is worth 10x the cost. Immaculate in a retail setting and it would sell for more than $3500. In a private sale, I would say that $3500 is less than half of discounted retail for new. See how the negotiation goes.

Thanks for the info. The serial # shows that the piano was made in 2000....they may have bought it in 2002 though. I would think this does not decrease the value by too much. $3900 seems to be the price so far. I am planning on having a tech look at it before I commit with any money.

The price of a used K-50E usually ranged between $3400 - $3900. You can check out local pawn shops for appraisal.

Really? Pawn shops? You're recommendation for an appraisal of a musical instrument is a place well known for ripping off their customers that also sells lawn mowers, "budget DVDs" and guns? I think a pawn shop would be the worst place to get a good appraisal of an instrument.

Excellent rant!

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.
