Does anyone know where I can find MSB, LSB & program settings data for the Roland HP300 series? I've found this information for the FP7-f and the new HP503,505, 507 series (it is in their midi implementation manuals).

And there is a midi implementation manual for the HP300 series - a pdf with 32 pages of midi data. However, it does not include bank/ program data for each patch, which is what I need.

The FP7-f & HP500 manuals work for some of the patches, but not all. What I need is the MSB LSB & program for SN Grand Piano 1 so I can program it into songs sequenced on my computer.

After a bit of experimentation, it sounds as if MSB=0 LSB=87 Program=0 gives you the default (and best) SN concert grand piano, but with no string or pedal resonance.

While MSB=8 LSB=66 Program=1 gives you a harsher SN piano (maybe 'grand piano 3'), but WITH both string and pedal resonance......Nuts!

When I selected SN Grand Piano over midi with my 700NX, I too noted that it didn't sound the same as when I played directly. As in, not SN, but as if if was dialed in as an extra 1-3 layer sound, which I don't think get the SN treatment. Has to be the main sound I think. Additionally, the midi commands for pulling up live sets didn't do diddly squat, as far as I could tell -- just silence.

Well what you describe, Xorbe, there sounds more like it's calling up a GM (general midi) sound from your RD700 - which could be one of the also ran piano sounds that Roland put in in addition to the (much, much better) SN Piano sounds. But even the SN sounds do not always get the proper string/ pedal resonance treatment over midi for some reason.

Live sets setting would use different (systems exclusive?) command channels from the ordinary bank/program ones, I would imagine. You would have to pool the intelligence of several manuals to get that working, probably.

Yeah I've been through those PDFs and sysex messages. Someone even emailed Roland because they couldn't get it to work either, but I never heard if there was a response or not. I need to go issue some vel=1 notes and see if sym.res is on or not over midi with a short vel=127 strike.

One thing you could do is set up your piano the way you want it, hit "record" and play a few notes, and then save the song to external USB memory (it will be saved as a midi file). The midi file will have the SYSEX and other commands for at least the critical configuration (like GP1 / 2 / 3, etc...).

....yes, of course there was an easy solution to this staring me in the face: the midi utility application, Midi-OX. You just monitor the input data flow on that. And sure enough, the MSB, LSB and program number are all nicely itemized as you make patch changes. It's all in hexadecimal but there are hex-to-decimal converters online so I've managed to find that non-GM patches that way.

Midi-Ox is free, transparent and brilliant. It's helped me sort out loads of problems of this sort over the years: http://www.midiox.com/
