Hi everyone. I'm new here and this is my first post.

I was wondering if anyone has any information about the Kirschner piano company. I've tried researching the name, but I haven't found much information.

I have a Kirchner baby grand piano. It's 5'5", with a black ebony finish. I haven't been able to find a serial number anywhere, so determining the age may be difficult. It looks like it's very old, could be 100 years old perhaps, I'm not sure. But at this point I'm mostly looking for info about the company. It seems to be a very obscure maker.

On the case is says "Kirschner", and on the harp it says "Kirschner, New York".

Someone told me that there was a brand of piano named Kirchner that was produced by a parent company named Johnson, but they were located elsewhere (and not in New York).

I'd appreciate any info about this company. Or if you know where to find the serial number, please let me know. I didn't see any numbers anywhere inside.

Thanks.

The Pierce Piano Atlas says that Kirschner was made by the Henry G. Johnson Piano Co. in Bellevue, Iowa. The range of serial numbers for that company goes from 1920 to 1928. Yours may not have been made in Iowa.

Serial numbers on grands of that age are often stamped into the wood of the soundboard at its edge. Remove the music desk (music support rack), and look along the bass side against the rim, and on the treble side on the edge parallel to the front of the piano. The highest number listed is 12,000, for 1928.

You can contact Pierce directly for info. Here's their serial number locator:
http://www.piercepianoatlas.com/findno.html

Pierce also lists a "Kirschner & Sons", with no location or other information.

Thanks for your help, Cy.

I looked all over the soundboard, and didn't find any serial number there, anywhere.

There is only one number I can see on the entire instrument. It's underneath, on the bottom. "165" is stamped into the wood bottom, directly underneath the Keyboard.

The Pierce website says that pianos often have numbers other than serial numbers, such as part numbers. It also says that part numbers are usually 4 digits or less. So maybe the "165" I saw was not the serial number. However, it's not stamped onto any removable part. It's stamped into a general area, underneath the piano.
