What's the best iPad app for learning or is using the iPad a bad idea for learning piano? There are a million of them in the App Store and I can't tell which is the best ones.

I have an Android, but I'm sure there are equivalent or better apps on Ipad. I use an app for sight reading, one for ear training, another will play and display MIDI scores. There is also Garage Band for Ipad, which isn't a learning app, but a music app.

I saw some apps with videos of lessons, but I didn't care for them. Going straight to YouTube was easier.

The sight reading app displays a note on the grand staff and you press the piano key on a tiny screen keyboard to match it. It has a timed game version so a person can try and beat their high score.

The ear trainer has four sections. First is a higher/lower game, second is match the note exactly on the screen keyboard upon hearing it (you can try some keys before making a guess), third is guessing how many intervals are between two notes, fourth is chord identification (chord sounds and a person has to identify it).

The MIDI score app is good for doing analysis and a way to hear and see a piece. If a person is smooth, they could even turn the volume down and sight read from the app as the MIDI version plays.

I also use the Android tablet to view music videos, tutorials, and display sheet music PDFs.

Christine, what do you want to learn on the ipad? I use my ipad for note training and as a metronome. It is great for that.

My daughter's teacher has her playing flash note derby on our ipad to learn the notes on the grand staff quickly by sight. She loves it and I think it's a great app.

i use Music Tutor on my iphone to improve my sight reading skills. It's a fun app and you can challenge friends as well.

Adult beginner since January 2013. My only regret is that I didn't learn sooner.

I have some music books on my iPad (Kindle app), such as Alfred's book 1 and the book of scales, plus I have Graham Fitch's ebooks Practicing the piano. Sometimes sheet music tends to be a bit small for my taste, so I bought Alfred's books 2 and 3 as regular paper books.

Oh, and there are nice chromatic tuners for the iPad, good for solfege/singing.

There are two great apps that can be used on both iPhone and iPad.

One is simply called "Music Theory" and the other is "Tenuto". They both are produced by the same folks that host the Music Theory website. I recommend both apps, as one teaches theory in the form of brief lessons, while the other is more interactive in helping you to learn sight reading through flash card type exercises.

I've got the jazz/blues piano lesson with Russ Ferrante. Good, especially for just $15. (It's beginner/intermediate; hopefully they'll supplement in the future with more advanced lessons from Russ).
