I can only imagine what this titan must have sounded like in concert. Certainly his few recordings don't yield much in the way of insights, let alone the legendary magic.

At least we have his music. It does not appeal to everyone, but for those who feel he wrote only for the mind and not the heart, listen to his 2nd Violin Sonata, the Elegies for piano, the opera Doktor Faust, Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra, 6th Sonatina (fantasy on Carmen), and of course the monumental Piano Concerto.

Happy Birthday!

Oh, is he also having birthday today, cool! Hooray for Busoni! A friend of mine is actually doing a doctorate on his music, performing all sonatinas, transcriptions, etc...very interesting music in many cases, rather peculiar. Not all is successful, but some works are really worth exploring. Of course, the infamous toccata is hardly playable, for most of us...

Underneath the scratchiness - and despite the lo-fidelity - the tone he produced was incredible. I would've loved to have heard it live.....

Indeed! And his many wonderful transcriptions, and the deeply felt Fantasy after J.S. Bach.

Perhaps I'll need to give those recordings another spin or find better transfers!

I read once that Arthur Rubinstein was invited to listen to some new hi-fangled recording of piano rolls that Busoni made- reputedly capturing the 'real' sound, the essence of Busoni, yada yada.

Rubinstein listened for a few minutes and muttered 'these are just a caricature'.

Happy birthday!

I love much of his work, but have yet to find a recording of his Piano Sonata in F Minor. I'd love to hear it!
