Hi all,

For the past few years I've been entering competitions, and always managed to pull off a Liszt work. First year it was Consolation no 3, second year it was Un Sospiro, and this year I did the Legend no 2. But now I've a dilemma, I need a new work and can't seem to make my mind up. It needs to be longer and a step up in difficulty. Anyone have any ideas to a piece similar to Sonetto 104 del Petrarca? I absolutely adore this work, but my lecturer is hesitant to do it, saying it's too overplayed and a more unknown work would be more effective. I'd like to play the Mephisto Waltz no. 1 but it might be too difficult for me to perform 100%.

Thanks

Liszt composed two other piano works based on the Petrarch sonnets, which are much less well-known, but still very beautiful:

Or, depending on much longer you can have, Vallée d'Obermann is shares some of the same fire:

He also composed several other Mephisto Waltzes, which are much more manageable:

Or if you want something that is like never heard:

I would suggest that you take more of a look through the first two books from "Annees de Pelerinage," as I suspect the work you're looking for is probably going to be in there. smile

Algernon: I hope, Cecily, I shall not offend you if I state quite frankly and openly that you seem to me to be in every way the visible personification of absolute perfection.

I can't really think of any that are too similar to SP 104, yet longer and more difficult than the Legende. Jolteon had some great ideas, i'll add a few that fit the bill as best as I can think.

And not really too relevant, but it's never played, the right length, and a favourite of mine so I must suggest it smile
