Yes, Alfred Level 3, and about 20 years of work after that.<g> But nobody wants to listen to someone else duplicate Keith Jarrett's work.

If you want to _invent_ music at that level, you should be making friends with God.

Everybody knows that Jarret quit piano lessons after Alfred Level 2, so with level 3 any bloke can do better!

I think, to be able to improvise at such a level is way more than a technical level. You have to get so intimate with the music that you can hear not only any note but also any chord before you play it, this kind of knowledge cannot be acquired with any book (or any teacher for that matter) but only come after years in a relationship with the music (think of an old couple, where a partner knows the other so well they start to complete each others sentences, I think that's a good analogy).

The best way in my experience is to turn off all the lights, close your eyes and just start playing. Let your fingers be guided by your ears. That is when the good stuff comes out. As long as you play visually you keep falling back into patterns.

Start with one or two notes and really listen for what the next one should be.
The story will unfold itself.

At least, that's the way I learned it smile

Also, broaden your musical horizon by listening to and analyzing many different styles of music.

Do you mean you want to improvise like Keith Jarrett on the Koln concert recording, or do you want to learn the transcriptions of the concert? (both take years of experience)

Who's Keith Jarrett?

I improvise in Alfred's Level One Book. My teacher doesn't call it that.

Does this have something to do with the jazzwee 5?

Check out this thread, rnaple:

http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1965111/1/Keith%20Jarrett.html

He's a jazz pianist (also plays classical) who's easily the best, or one of the best, musical improvisers in the world.

Oh, and there are many types of improvising - from altering small parts of already-written-out compositions to improvising a full 10+ minute piece from a small few-second musical idea. Most, if not all, of Jarrett's solo concerts these days consist of that second type of improvising (like The Koln Concert, a recording of a concert by the same name).
