So my parents' terrible old 'Mozart' branded piano has finally bitten the dust... well, that happened a while ago but they've finally got round to replacing it. Looking at the sorry sack of strings, I couldn't help but think that even that knackered old thing is better-looking than my composition and practice setup - entirely digital, the Roland RD-700SX running through a computer into some meaty speakers. Cables galore, messy, black, out-of-control.

So I had a brainwave. My dad is a carpenter, my brother is an electronic engineer, I am a musician.... couldn't we put our heads together and figure out some way of getting all my ugly electronic equipment packed into the box of that old piano? With a window for a monitor, speakers, computer, effects, audio interface all mounted internally with some kind of door to access them, perhaps even some shelving put in for practice books?

It would be a pretty epic undertaking but could work if we all put our heads together... anyone done something similar, or know of someone who has?

There is a thread here of someone who did that a while back. This isn't the one I'm thinking of, but it's pretty involved:

It sounds like a great idea!!

CMac, a user here on PW, did a similar thing with a grand piano not that long ago:

Yep, it can, and has been done...just don't expect it to be a quick weekend project.

The grand project is immense, but that is way more in-depth sound-wise than I am planning on going. I just want somewhere to disguise all my equipment. But yes, it will still be an epic project, possibly something to save for the summer!

You must post pics! In fact do you have a pic of your current set up?

One suggestion - The piano keys still need to be functional. Then I could practice and surf the web at the same time! laugh
