My piano tech recently did some work on my piano, and said that it is missing only a few bits to have a fully functioning sostenuto pedal (it is a Heintzman upright). He will be looking for the bits for me, but in the meantime, I'd be interested in finding a piece to play that would use it.

I was taking lessons until fairly recently (teacher moved out of province), and am working on the requirements for Royal Conservatory grade 8. Can anyone recommend a piece at more or less that level that uses the sostenuto pedal? To be clear, this would be because I think it's cool, not for exam requirements.

Alison.

There's lots of Eric Satie that can only be played (as it's written) with a sostenuto pedal.

A long sustained bass note is written, and above it (and starting after it is struck) is stuff that needs _both hands_ to play, and that will blur if you use the damper pedal.

So the sostenuto pedal holds down that bass note while you play the rest.

Debussy uses the same technique.

Thank you! I'll look into Satie and Debussy.
