On these weekends Philadelphia is inundated with young tremendously talented musicians, many from outside the USA. A good amount of the piano students stop by to tour our place, do a little practicing, warm up, etc.

Although none of them are customers (at least presently), we welcome their visits.

I totally enjoy chatting with these young people who have their lives ahead of them, are excited to be in Philadelphia, are nervous about their audition, and many of whom have a pretty cool story as well.

Anyway, if I have time I video a few of them on the fly. This is Eric Lu, 15. Enjoy:

Can you share any of their personal stories without mentioning names?

Does Curtis have a pre-college program?(Prompted by the age of the pianist you show in the video)

Curtis accepts students regardless of age; both young and old.

PL,

I met 3 kids from Jakarta, Indonesia. One boy did not own a piano and knew very little about them as instruments, but he could play! (Total understatement). He has been practicing since he was three on a church piano. The church helped fund his travel to the US for this audition.

Curtis doesn't have a pre-college program, PL. In fact, it's graduates do not get a "degree", they get a performance certificate (At least that is what I THINK they call it).

I don't know of any limits on how young the auditionees can be, but they have local Philadelphia families that "adopt" the kids while they study here. They can invite the kids over for dinner, be there if there is a problem, etc.

The youngest that I have met coming into town for an audition was 10 years old, but there may be younger.

Thanks for the questions. I hope you liked the video.

I actually think there is an age limit, Dave.

It is too late for you and I.

Hi Rich,

Curtis does offer degree programs. In addition to the performance diplomas, Bachelor programs are available in all musical disciplines as well as a Masters in opera.

Marty in Minnesota

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

Eric Liu sure just passed my audition. Sorry I can't offer a scholarship. Thanks for posting the video.

Very cool, Rich. Thanks for sharing. I have no idea what piece the kid is playing, but his technique is certainly there. How often would you say these kids stop by? I think that's really neat that, 1) they know where you are (there's a lot of city between you and Curtis!), and 2) you guys are nice enough to let them stop in.

Derulux,

It is only a cab or car ride away - 15 minutes up Kelly Dr. and Lincoln Dr.

Keith beat me to the piece. Frankly, I knew it was an etude, but Eric needed to tell me the opus and number. One young person played the "black keys" etude beautifully as well. (I do not know the opus on that either. Sorry.)

Also, this happens a couple times each year.

I wish him the best of luck there. He was a fine young man who had two wonderfully supportive parents. He played beautifully as well.

Just curious, are you somehow connected with Curtis or Eric?
