I have an 8 year student (beginner's level) who is very very eager to move ahead, which is not a bad thing! However, I've never had one like her. What would you do? Do you:
-give her hints of what to look out for in upcoming songs "in case she moves ahead" so she doesn't spend an entire week playing the piece incorrectly
-get her more books at the same level so she can't try to finish that level too quickly?
Any advice would be appreciated!

I try to find the perfect amount of work given their ability, enthusiasm, and practice time available.

First, I'd make sure she is practicing efficiently. In elementary music, however, this is quite a challenge, so it depends on how "beginner" she is. If the music is not complex enough that any practice tips are required, then give her a challenge piece. Something that is a bit beyond her from a repertoire book outside of her method. Nothing too far, but just a bit and enjoyable for her.

Also, I would give her more to do during the week. It's tough to cover all the concepts if she's moving faster than average, so you might need longer lessons if you are doing 30 minutes.

Which books do you have her working out of? If she's using the Piano Adventures series, I would recommend fleshing out her library with the Popular Repertoire books from the same series... I really like their theory and creativity activities as well, and it's just a little something extra without taking over the main method book.

Also, if you're concerned that she may practice something incorrectly that you assign her, just to 'keep her busy', I would also also suggest taking a look at the 'Music By Me' series. It's a creativity study, which starts at an extremely simple level, and the kids can work at their own pace at home, with a little guidance in the lesson.
