I've been told I should wait about a month to have my "new" used piano tuned, once it's in my house.

Is this true?

And, is it ok to play on it in the meantime?

A piano can be tuned at any time, it won't hurt it. The reason that a wait is recommended is so that the piano can acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the new environment. If you tune it now, it might need to be re-tuned in a month anyway.

Certainly, you can play the instrument. Unless the piano is frozen, it will do no harm.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

We couldn't wait. Had a tuning within about a week and then again about a month later.

I noticed subtle changes with my piano for about three weeks while it acclimated. I would hold off for a month if possible.

This is bad to say, but I used to tweek the tuning on the wayward unisons on my pianos at least once a week, then once a month... now, maybe once every two months. It's never out of tune that badly, but I've lost my zeal to grab my tuning hammer so often. I do a complete tuning about once every 5 or 6 months now.

Yet, and still, there is nothing that sounds better than a well tuned piano! (Except someone who really knows how to play one... smile ).
