I am a complete "newbie" at piano. No one in my family plays piano. I have wanted to learn for many years, but have never taken the first step. Now I am ready...

As a newbie, I know nothing about acoustics or touch in order to evaluate a piano. I have been studying Larry Fine's Piano Buyer and this forum to help guide my decision. Similar to most space & money are a factor for me. 5'0" - 5'4" max size. Budget $5000. Uprights are not an option as this will be prominently placed in my living room (e.g wife considers this purchase furniture) I want to attempt to buy right the first time if I can, as I anticipate in time that I will develop an ear and a touch for piano. The only thing that I have noticed so far is that I really like deep mellow bass, which I know is difficult to find in a five footer.

Given my budget, I have focused my search on the used market. I have come across what I think is a good deal and would like some advice. I have found a Young Chang Y150 brand new with warranty for $6300 + $100 delivery & taxes. I dismissed this piano at first because of "less than five foot sucks" and "Made in China sucks", but after reading this article http://www.pianobuyer.com/fall10/92.html I realize that I too hastily dismissed this piano. What do you think?

BTW, This piano would be purchased for my own personal gratification - no concerts for me.

It's not a good buy if your budget is $5000.

I have never played this model, but player several uprights in my college dorm - they were quite nice.
And I recently played a used yangchang grand- it has a similar tone to Yamaha. I liked it for the cost.

Again I am not familiar for baby grand at this price range. The only one I played is Yamaha gb1k- the action is nice, tendor and trebe are decent too. But the bass is lacking - like U1 or less.

This is the down side about very small grand. But for your budget this seems like an amazing buy. Proper room placement will enhance the bass effect.

My suggestion would be exam the bass carefully see if it will satisfy you for the long term. If you think its good enogu then go fir it. Th ideal situtation would be getting a slightly used, but larger grand for same cost.

They look good. Your wife couldn`t fail to be impressed. It`s guaranteed. . . I`d go for it if I wasn`t a Digital Junkie . . .

Perhaps, but $5000 is a very difficult budget for a desirable grand.

ttuato, I, too, liked the new YC150 when I played it at NAMM. That's pretty cheap; I think you've done well.

Thanks for all the advice and comments. I realize that $5000 is too cheap for a NEW grand but, I figured a used grand in the small 5ft range it would be sufficient. I wasn't considering new but this deal seemed really good, so I wanted the PW opinions as to whether or not it would be worth digging a little deeper into my wallet.

As I read more reviews and opinions (taking info effect these are all subjective), it seems that the small baby grands have not historically been very well thought. It appears that only recently have advances been made in this category of instruments that move them out of the strictly "furniture" department. As such, anything used under 5'4" in my price range will most likely be inferior to this YC musically plus have other disadvantages of being used (no warranty, unknown history, condition of parts, etc.) There is a Hailun dealer close by too. I will check on a HG151 first then pull the trigger between the two.

Bear in mind that Hailun also make a 5'4", I believe (161 cm).

After speaking directly with a few dealers I found on PW, I have learned that the Hailun 151 is definitely out of my price range. Using the same article from Larry Fine cited before, and the suggestion of a dealer - I am now intrigued by a Ritmuller R8/9 or GH148 for options. From what I have gathered these are probably in my price range.
