Hello everyone! I'm very interested in learning to play piano. I've come to the conclusion that I want to start on a keyboard. Are there any that you might recommend?

I know that weighted keys are important.
My fingers aren't the longest.
My budget is around $200.
I'd like something that comes with a stand and headphones.

Someone suggested this to me earlier. Is it a good buy?

Any help is very much appreciated!

Yamaha P105. the new keyboard are much nicer than the old ones (even you can find a used online)

May I suggest that you post your question in the Digital/Keyboard Forum? You will get more replies from people who are more versed with those instruments. This thread is primarily focused on acoustic pianos.

I got my Kawai FS-690 for $50 from Craig's list. That kind of keyboard is fine in the beginning for getting your fingers in the right places at the right times. It's great for silent practice on dreary drills. Figure on buying separate headphones, and if it doesn't come with a stand, just use an ironing board or whatever.... I have an old time typewriter stand under mine.

After a while on that, find some places -- church, school, gin joint, etc. -- where you can get a little time in on a real piano.

If you decide that playing keyboard music isn't for you, you can probably Craig's List it again and get most if not all your money back.

If you move onward and upward, figure on putting several thousand into a good acoustic piano. But keep the little portable silent practice keyboard. It'll come in handy from time to time, and playing on a variety of different keyboard instruments builds up your ability to adapt to the touch of whatever instruments you encounter. That turns out to be way more important than you might think.

Are you thinking that eventually you will be upgrading to a regular piano (digital or acoustic)? You may be able to find something on craigslist for that price.

If you plan to upgrade, however, I recommend against spending $200 now for something. There are several piano dealers where you can rent a piano for a fixed amount of time (acoustic or digital) and it's something like $40/month depending on the dealer. Anyways, after 6 months they usually let you take the rent payments you've made toward the purchase of a new instrument. Your $200 would last you 5 months, and you can be saving up at that point to buy something that will last you many years (some digital start at $500 brand new, so you don't have to break the bank).

Or, simply try to get a non-weighted, less than 88-key cheap keyboard for under $50 that will hold you over until you save enough to buy something to last.

$200 is tough for a digital keyboard with 88 keys and is weighted. You will definitely have to buy used.

If renting is an option while you save, that might be your best option. After all, what if you don't enjoy it after you start? You will have then saved yourself some money.

if I was you, i'd save up till you have at least $400-500 then buy something that will last you longer. There is no point spending $200 on a useless sounding non weighted 61or76 key keyboard that you will hate and give up piano with!

save the money, and buy something decent!
