I have a young friend who asked me if I would be interested in his piano to fix up and sell. It is an old upright. While I was explaining to him that it probably wasn't worth fixing up, but that I would probably just take it apart and use the parts.
Then he mentioned that it was supposed to have belonged to Country Music Star Loretta Lynn.
My question is how would I go about verifying that it did belong to Loretta Lynn?
I personally didn't know that Loretta Lynn owned a piano. I know she had a piano player for her concerts, but that is all I know about Loretta Lynn.
I live near Nashville, and Lynn's ranch. I suppose I could start there.

Contact her manager and get the piano's provenance in writing from her. Might be a tall order though....

Loretta Lynn Is Dead! Or at least she was dead. She died on the operating table in June of 2006. But was resuscitated and the surgery continued. She is supposedly living at her ranch in Tennessee.

You might contact these folks and see if they have any thoughts / advice?

Why not contact Miss Lynn directly? Send a letter, with a photo of the piano, and just ask. It may hold some sentimental value for her and you might land a good rebuilding contract.

Minnesota: I have e-mailed Miss Lynn's museum. I have not heard back from them as I only sent it yesterday, but your thought is correct. I plan to pursue this farther, as my friend told me that when I want to come get the piano, he'll help me load it into my truck. He just wants it out of the way as he is expecting twins in a few months. LOL

Well I can tell you this, I have pretty good contacts with lots of artists but anymore they all want NDA's {Non Disclosure Agreements) signed when I go out to get their pianos. It's one thing to be on speed dial with everyone that is someone in Nashville to go to parties and BBQs but I totally avoid the " Name thing"

This usually comes into play when I go pick up some piano from lets say a private home. I can say it was celebrity owned but that is about it. I picked up one last year from a house Elvis rented and had to sign a TON of papers making sure I didn't use it as a sales gimmick

There are good people to talk to and there are those who will think you are trying to capitalize on a copyrighted name. It was far easier before the internet came about and privacy laws etc.

I would say if I were looking for proof I would start with a producer. Producers are a LOT easier to deal with than an individual. If you have an idea on who that is I might be able to get some info.

My friends aunt gave the piano to him. His mother is checking it out. We'll see how that comes out.
