Couple questions----I just invested in a mendelsson baby grand...serial 10154. It's in mint shape but do to some top side wear I am refinishing. Wood appears to be mahogany...and the previous color was a dark brown. I have begun stripping it down to the natural wood and really want to go for the black stain...classy look but have not decided for sure. This is my first piano project and piano period.... How much do you think my piano is worth considering the model and make. Also how much am I killing the value by changing the original color? Any input is appreciated. It needs to be tuned but all keys are present and the guts look/function great.

Welcome to PW and congratulations on your piano. One word of caution - refinishing a piano for the first time is a large and challenging enterprise, not only for a hobbyist, but even for a professional and experienced furniture re-finisher with a complete shop set-up: spray booth etc. I wish you perseverance and luck.

In all likelihood, refinishing it, even in a different color will not "kill the value", provided it is done properly. If the job is good, it can enhance the value.

There were several companies with the name Mendelssohn; your piano probably dates to 1903 if it is the Mendelssohn made by Winter.

I am not sure if any piano over 50 years old that needs to be re-finished could be considered to be in "mint" condition. A piano technician should be able to give you more information about your instrument's condition if you call him to take a look and tune it.
