Hi, I'm interested in a new Yamaha U3 that I played in a store. I can't help but notice that every piano store I go into seems to house gazillions of pianos yet almost always seems to be empty of potential buyers. Anyway the new U3 is on sale for around 9.4k and I'm thinking of walking in the store and giving them a take or leave it offer of 6.1k in cash. Is this feasible? Is this offer reasonable? If they don't take the offer I'll just walk till I find a store that will.
I ask this because I don't know how piano stores even stay afloat, by holding so much inventory, that doesn't seem to move. I've played piano for over 25 years and I know a tiny few that have ever even purchased a piano for 5k let alone 10k or more.
It was just seem to me that every piano store I've been in the sales folks are trying desperately to hard close me and whatnot. They must be desperate.

That's what I thought really. You are free to go with a low cash offer and they will let you know how close they can get to it. But they want their profit and rightly so. Between you the correct price will be realised.
You also need to know when the deal is good though or you could end up walking away from a great purchase. Remember as well that every piano is different. The Yamaha should be pretty consistent but even so it's important to buy the piano you really want. An instrument like this is a long term prospect so don't let the one you want pass for the sake of a few dollars.

From the indicators I see of recent prices and even more recent price increases, $6100 represents an absurd offer on a U3. I've not seen anything anywhere that suggests this offer would even be considered. Where did you come up with this number?

If the store has been open for a number of years and doesn't have a "Going Out of Business" sign in their window, they're probably not that desperate. There are a lot of sales a business can do without having customers physically in the store... group sales to schools or other institutions is one example. Dealers are spread out quite a bit and cover large regions of territory. From what I understand, Yamahas are always in demand.
