Can anyone recommend a print edition for Bach's notebook for anna magdelena? I'm looking for the complete works in the original order with decent editorial markings. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What kind of editorial markings are you looking for?

Nothing specific, I was just thinking some fingering suggestions are useful to me. I don't want to buy the straight urtext with no markings at all. Some dynamics wouldn't be so bad either. (I haven't played too long.)

The Alfred edition has fingering and articulation suggestions. Has your teacher recommended AMB to you? If you haven't been playing very long, it may be more difficult than you can handle.

Minniemay,

I have a photocopy given to me a few years ago from the 1950s. My extensive music store didn't have that version, so I am interested in the Alfred version you mentioned because I am sure that they will have that. I have been playing for a year so I am not quite ready for it.

you?

Please explain. Thank you

I personally would not want one with a lot of editorial markings that are not original to the score.

The ones in the Alfred edition are printed in gray so you know it's their mark.

I like the Schirmer Performance edition. It has editorial markings, performance notes covering style and interpretation, performance notes for each piece, and a recording of each piece on an included CD.

There are two different notebooks, compiled in different years and with different pieces.

Probably you knew that but just in case.

You can get a look at either on IMSLP for free. That's a really good resource for public domain music, then you can go buy the book if you like what you see.

gotta go practice
