Enjoy this afternoon with the GREAT man of jazz, Dick Hyman. He gave us a wealth of insight from his incredible career and played some top-notch jazz at 84)

Thanks Dave!

Playing piano at age 2, it was thought that I was some sort of idiot-savant. As it turns out, I'm just an idiot.

When I was 84... It was a very good year.

Wait, isn't that one of your students?

Best duet ever.

Thanks for the master classes. I greatly enjoyed Dick's playing. But I'm a little disappointed that I didn't learn that much about playing jazz piano.

It would have been great to ask him to break down exactly what he did on that opening number, how and why. Or ask him how does one learn to play stride. Or how to learn to walk a bass line in the left hand. Or what common mistakes he sees in his students' or other pianists' playing. How to go about memorizing a tune. Show us some of his favorite methods in developing a solo. What did he learn in those 12 lessons with Teddy Wilson. Does he try to "tell a story" in his soloing? If so, how? How does he see the future of jazz piano playing. Etc.

This was the first master class I checked out. Perhaps you've already covered all of that in your other master classes. But it would have been interesting to get more nuts and bolts stuff from Hyman in any case.

I just had the pleasure of seeing Dick Hyman perform last night in San Francisco in the annual SF Jazz Stride Piano Summit. What an amazing player, he's still got it.

The only disappointment is that there wasn't more Hyman. He was the marquee name who packed the house, but he played only intermittently. While he was most interesting playing solo, much of his time was spent in duo formats, which I find often too busy -- "too many notes" as the duke in "Amadeus' might say.

The other disappointment is that I came out of the show to find that someone had smashed out the passenger side window of my car and stolen a bunch of music books (which I had foolishly placed in a Microsoft laptop bag) and a piano stand light. I guess that's life in the big city.

I hope SF Jazz has Hyman back soon -- and playing solo next time. In the meantime, I'm enjoying listening to him play my Disklavier.
