If I want to try to software instruments that are VST plugins, what software should I use to if I want something simple, free, user-friendly, and resource-friendly, etc.

I'm not interested in a using a DAW for anything whatsoever, I just want to play software instruments, and they often come in the form of VST plugins.

Maybe the answer is (as it often is in the world of software) "all the free options suck". But I have no idea (yet).

You can get a free trial copy of Pianoteq at the link below. It has it's own operational platform, and requires nothing more than your computer or laptop. You will need to restart it every 20 minutes; and 3 or 4 notes are not playable (black keys only)... but this will allow you to have some fun with midi sounds that are modeled for all 127 velocities. I understand that you want something for free. The quality of sound you may desire will likely be found in one of several major VST brands, such as Ivory; Pianoteq; Galaxy Vintage D; and Native Instruments, Alicia's Keys. It's all a matter of your personal taste!

You may very well enjoy this little experiment with Pianoteq well enough to look at a purchase. You can get the base setup for about $139.00, and it will allow you to play without a lot of advanced tweaks. Of the four mentioned above, Native Instrument's Alicia's Keys, is probably the cheapest way to go. Cost for AK is about $100 (US).

I wanted to ask about a free VST *host*, I should have made that clearer. I do use Vintage D already.

'Cantabile' and 'VST Host' are both lightweight, freeware VST host programmes that should offer the functionality you're looking for.

Not the prettiest interface, but they work.

I know you said no DAW, but it would probably be just about as easy to point a simple DAW at the VSTs and load them that way too.

I use Mulab, it's very nice and allows you to add some effects to VST instrument if you want to (some EQ, filter or reverb).

I use MiniHost and asHost. Both are free. Each has features lacking in the other. Take your pick.
