Hi
I am restoring an Ibach from 1911.
I can't find a scale in Travis book so I scaled the original strings
as they were removed.
Given the age and rust I am not convinced I have the best scale
and was wondering what other rebuilders on this forum might suggest.
Software/books etc./or other sources.

You won't find any books or references giving scale data for this piano.

Most of us, when faced with this type of project, measure the string lengths, what diameters we can and develop a whole new stringing scale. Usually one that is smoother and more balanced than the original.

If you don't care to develop the skills necessary to do this work yourself there are now several rebuilders around the country who offer this service (for a nominal fee, of course).

I have an Excel spreadsheet that allows you to plug in the length of the strings and returns the tension for a given wire gauge or the gauge for a given tension.

You can download it here.

You need to plug in the lengths yourself. The numbers in there are from another piano. The units are inches of length and pounds of tension. I aim for a scale where the tension varies as little as possible from note to note.

Check out the Paulello strings site. He has a bunch of info. BTW I am working on a 1908 Bechstein and was sure there was no scale marked, until the wire was off and then I could see sizes marked in the bridge notches !

ScaleRipper should be pretty much self-explanatory although a little experience with understanding the basics of piano stringing scales is always helpful.

Start with one of these and see where it gets you.
