Hi everyone. I posted some thoughts about potential piano purchases back in 2009. I said then that I was very interested in the Steingraeber-Phoenix, but that it would be a few years before I would be in a position to consider buying one. I could only have considered the 168 even then.

However, in around January 2011, Richard Dain informed me that at Hurstwood Farm Piano Studios, he and his CEO and chief technician Geoffrey Sapsford, had finalised the production of their Phoenix piano. This is a piano in which the acoustically relevant parts (what they call the 'acoustic body') is made alongside the Steingraeber-Phoenix models in the Steingraeber factory. Then they are taken to Poland to have all the cabinetry fitted including lid, pedals, fallboard, etc. All Phoenixes have a carbon-fibre soundboard.

This all meant that they could offer the piano within my price range - even giving me a 'first batch' discount further to the price differential that their piano allows compared to the wholly Steingraeber built model. I was surprised that Steingraeber were happy to do this, but apparently it suits everyone. The fallboard has embossed in it 'acoustic body by Steingraeber Klavierfabrik'.

I purchased a 212, and it was delivered in September 2011. It is an utterly lovely instrument, with the Phoenix system's bridge agraffes giving it an ethereal, milky, yet bright, sound. I find it perfect for Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, anyone really (not that I am a great pianist). The sustain is amazing.

There is a trade-off on these pianos, as all, between brightness-sustain and mellowness. I prefer as mellow as possible while keeping some sustain. Geoffrey Sapsford continues to work on getting this just to my taste, but it is anyway a lovely sound and touch.

I don't think these Phoenixes have been mentioned on this forum before. Any comments welcome.

They have. Several times. We're pretty good at staying well informed about industry happenings. I got to see some of the earliest ones, but they were not yet completed. Virtually indistinguishable from their 100% Bayreuth cousins.

My apologies - I did search but the references must have been buried in mentions of the city. Can you point me to the thread/s?

Best, Will

Yes, I feel very lucky to have one.
