I'm building a house which will be finished soon. The place I have in mind for the piano (probably a 6'10" Grotrian) has two problems - it is against a wall with a large north facing window and there is a floor AC vent right in front of that window.

There is not much direct light through that window plus curtains/blinds will usually be closed.

I could angle the piano away from the window somewhat to get a couple of feet away from the vent, but is that good enough? I can also install a directional register to direct the airflow away from the piano. Should I have them totally relocate this vent to elsewhere in the room at considerable expense and inconvenience?

Since the house is brand new, the envelope is very tight. We are installing an air exchager that recaptures moisture and the HVAC contractor assures me humidity will be kept 40-60 year round. I am in the south, so cooling is a bigger concern than heating.

How close to the vent is too close?

Should I post this over on the tech forum?

TIA

from a building science perspective, heat radiats at fairly fast rate. So as long as the vent does not directly blow to your piano the cool air should "average out" with your room temperature fairly fast.

try not place your piano next to the piano. conventional window design tends to creat thermal bridge may cause thermal discomfort, condensation, at at worst-molding close the window area. curtain helps.

a couple feet will make enough difference.

In my experience as a technician having about 16 inches of linear clearance from the outside edge of the straight side of the piano and the vent should work given that your house has a fully modern HVAC. If you can direct that vent all vertical and even restrict it some that should help also. It can also depend on how many other vents the room has whether this will make you uncomfortable.

Get a hygrometer and place it on the bass music desk area and record the values morning and night for several weeks to establish a baseline Relative Humidity.
