Hi,

I am hoping someone can tell me about this Jesse French piano I have come across.

In the middle, it says "H and A Selmer Inc. New Castle Ind." Off to the right, it says "Jesse French & Sons".

The serial number is 210663.

I found this online "In 1941, H. A. Selmer, Inc. entered the piano market, purchasing the Jesse French Company of New Castle, Indiana and built pianos from 1902 to 1952."

I assume that the piano falls in that range (1902-1952), most likely being close to the 1952 date. If anyone has access to pierce's piano atlas and can confirm the date I would be grateful.

From what I can tell, it's a spinet piano. I can post some pictures later if anyone wants to see it.

I'm also curious to know what it's worth. It's in very good condition and is only slightly out of tune.

Thanks,
David

Dear David,

My Pierce puts your Jesse French as a 1951 production year.

These pianos were mid-level, decently made, and often quite nice in sound and playability.

The only caveat to throw out there is that they made several years of this piano with plastic parts....not just elbows..but ALL plastic, from the whippens to the damper-levers, jacks and every flange in the instrument. Such an instrument would not be worth the investment to replace literally every part of the action. As you suggest that the instrument is playable, and just needs a tuning; it may be that this piano is from just before that period of production.

I'd certainly suggest a technician take a look before purchase. At a minimum; take a hard look at the action with a good flashlight in hand and see if the various parts, or some of them, might be made of a slightly yellowish plastic.

Otherwise? I have a couple Jesse French pianos in the customer files, and they are decent pianos to tune and play. Good luck, sir!

Your mileage may vary,
Respectfully,
I am,
