Since I did a post in the piano forum regarding Steinways innovation, or lack thereof, I did some patent searches. And I found a pretty interesting one regarding Yamaha.

Publication number EP2261891 A1
Publication date Dec 15, 2010
Filing date Jun 2, 2010
Priority date Jun 3, 2009

http://www.google.com/patents/EP2261891A1
Method for synthesizing tone signal and tone signal generating system
EP 2261891

Apparently Yamaha is getting ready for full physical modelling sound generation. The only mention of sampl* in the text is for sampling time.

It's interesting to compare the two related US patents, in the later one several claims have been cancelled.

A nice find indeed,

I gave it a quick read and it sounds like they really are onto something.
I look forward to hearing the results.

Thanks for sharing,
Paolo

This appears to be old and dated material as you can see by the "publication date" of December 15, 2010.

Yamaha has already incorporated some physical modeling features in both the CP1 and CP5.

The only new digital with physical modeling will be the "Physis Piano," at the website below:

http://www.physispiano.com/

Unfortunately, the Physis Piano contains an Italian "Fatar" action, so buyer beware.

Yes, they have implemented some, but not all, of the technology (I think)?

The patent application is by no means dated, thinking so shows little insight into patent strategy & how long it can take to develop and optimize a finished product.
