My wife has a Steinway Upright, Serial # 65058. I believe it is a Model "M" circa 1889. It still has the hinges for the music desk in place but the desk itself has been missing since we purchased it. Is there any place to purchase just a desk for this model? If not, I was going to attempt make one myself. I have had a hard time finding photos that show the details of the stand. It appears to be approx 18 inches long by 3 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. The ends appear not to be square and it looks like reeding on the top surface.
If anyone has an original that they would like to sell, we would be interested. If not, some detailed photos would be appreciated.
Any suggestions on removing yellow/brown stains for the ivory keys are welcome.
Thanks.

For a specialty product such as obsolete ivory wafer heads and tails I would suggest you have your regular technician look at them and recommend a process or someone who is aware of a process for cleaning genuine ivory. Usual methods require knowledge of how to dismantle the cabinetry and remove the keys.

Images of 1889 Steinway uprights, here are some photos of different cabinet styles. Not sure if any of those are M’s….they could be photos of K’s or possible R’s or T’s………

Here is a place you might get a vintage desk made.

I made one of those desks once. I made it routing groove by groove, which was a delicate operation. I would rout a groove, turn the screws holding the fence a precise number of turns, and rout the next groove very carefully. Most people would use a molding cutter, but that is expensive.
