I started playing piano in July last year on an inexpensive Yamaha digital piano, thinking that this would probably be adequate for me. Eight months on, however, things are going quite well and I am now considering buying an acoustic piano.

For reasons of space and cost it will probably have to be an upright model but here in the UK there seems to be a more limited range of makes and models available than in the US. I visited a piano dealer and identified two pianos with a pleasant mellow tone and comfortable touch that suited me and I should be grateful for any advice you are able to offer when comparing them.

The models concerned are the Irmler P118 or P120 (sorry I can't be more specific - the manager was away and the french polisher from the restoration side of the business couldn't identify exactly which Irmler model it was) and the Kawai K2. They both appear to be about the same price, approx £3,300.

Same price on these two seems odd. In the US, an Irmler such as you describe would be much higher than the Kawai.

It's probably good to track down exact info about that Irmler. I think Irmler has a higher line built in Poland and a lower line built in China.

You should get the model and serial number and see what's up.

Thanks for the information. Both pianos are new. Perhaps it indicates a poorer quality Irmler model. I'll try to get more details and investigate.

Interesting... In the 2006-2007 edition of "The Piano Book", it mentions that the Chinese made Irmler pianos have been discontinued. The pianos are made in Poland to strict Bluthner specs and then shipped to Bluthner in Germany for final action assembly and regulation.

That is interesting. Perhaps the Irmler is a better deal than I thought. I haven't yet had time to follow up with the dealer but at least I now have a better idea of the sort of questions I need to ask. Thanks.
