My hunt for a DP continues and I could have found a good deal , I took two guitars to my local music shop today to sell as they were getting dusty in the loft ,and he gave me £300 / $480 which i was happy with TBH, I enquired about digital pianos but generally they sell guitars but he had just got in a cvp 401 traded in for a gibson guitar it's in mint condition and it comes with 1 year shop warranty the price is £600 /$960 but with my £300 credit I would only have to shell out £300/$480 which makes it easier too.

Is this a decent deal as its only a 3 year old piano , due to the fact I'm a total novice I'm sure it would be totally adequate for my skill level .

Any thoughts would help as I may go buy it tomorrow .

Regards Carl

The CVP401 is at the low end of the CVP line of pianos.

It has lots of gizmos (accompaniment features). I don't know whether you need those. But it has only one-level sampling. That puts it at the very bottom among ALL of Yamaha's many pianos.

For about the same money you can get a new P155. It has four sampling levels. But it's just a keyboard, not a console. I don't know whether that matters to you.

Yes, it was expensive when new. I think it was marketed to people willing to pay (or foolish enough to pay) a hefty premium for the bells and whistles that are piled onto Yamaha's lowest-spec piano.

Is it good enough, though, for a beginner? Yes.

As for price ... I always offer a lower price than the dealer's asking price. If he's prepared to sell at the price of his choice, he can listen as I offer my lower price.

As always, know and understand all of the costs. The CVP401 is heavy. Will you pay for the dealer to deliver? If not, get help with the transport.

Will it sound okay? That's for you to judge. You have tried the piano yourself, haven't you? (Never buy a piano you haven't played yourself ... or had someone play for you as you listen.)

To be honest mac

With no experience it sounded like a piano but they all would to me .
I was thinking that if I wanted to upgrade at a later date the clavinova's seem to hold value, well following them on eBay they seem to fetch decent prices and the ones I looked at were all 10+ years old .

It looks like a bloody aeroplane cockpit with all buttons but it also has been very well looked after too , thing is swaying it for me really is I have £300 shop credit , btw initially he wanted £700 but he came down to six if I picked up the piano myself , it is only 10k away and I have a van .

Is there any price guides on second hand pianos anywhere ?

Regards carl

It's not a piano I'd want to buy, especially when new at it's outrageous price. But at $960, not too bad.

Digital pianos don't hold value very well. That CVP401 might be at $960 now, but it was likely purchased at close to $3000 when new a few years ago. Fortunately for you, that big depreciation already took place, and you can buy at a low price.

JUST BE SURE IT'S IN GOOD CONDITION. Evaluate the keys for proper operation. All 88 keys and the pedals.
