Anyone research how Kontakt (player) will perform upgrading to Windows 8? I've got my VST's running fairly well but if Windows 8 can improve memory management, etc. maybe I would consider upgrading. Right now, I have zero interest in upgrading after reading/watching Windows 8 in action.

I'm also interested in this! Looking forward to any insight anyone can give. I'm due a system re-install, and perhaps moving to windows 8 is the correct path for me, so I'd like to know what are the experiences people are having.

Thanks!
Rafa.

I'm reading that Windows 8 is just Windows 7, plus a screen filled with touch-sensitive icons/tiles. That's meant for mobile devices and won't work with a normal desktop/laptop.

They're removable, revealing a desktop that looks like Windows 7.

Translation: No reason to change to Windows 8. It's for your phone/tablet, not for your normal computer.

I think the idea is that in adapting Windows to tablets, they might also have optimized it in order to make the battery last longer. Which could mean less stuff going on in the background, more free CPU power, less memory waste, etc. But nobody knows for sure yet how well it actually runs compared to Windows 7.

I googled windows 8 memory management and there was tests and evidence that 8 uses less memory and boots quicker. I figured with that Metro interface it would drain memory. It will be interesting to see what NI will have to say about this.

i bought a couple copies at work to test, but only b/c I have to be on top of the latest. But I can't imagine it will make any difference for Kontakt. I have loaded XP and windows 7 on this same laptop i use with my piano and it sounds and performs the same.

I am actually thinking of finally doing a dual boot machine: one sector for online browsing, playing and the more risky installs, and another just for work stuff: Adobe, Autodesk and the Audio products.

Since I'm already facing this situation, rather than advantages (of which there are probably few to have), I'm looking to know if anyone knows of a critical disadvantage that would involve using Win8 (for instance, I don't know, different access methods to HDD which creates pops on samples, or the likes -I'm just giving a for instance, I have no reason to believe this is the case! - )

Thanks,
Rafa.

MacMacMac, aside from the tiled 'Start' screen, I believe there are also a number of 'under the hood' improvements to Windows 8. However, I doubt there would be a significant improvement in VST performance compared to Windows 7.

Cheers,
James

We tested Windows 8 a bit at work. From a purely usability point of view, it is rather horrible for keyboard/mouse users. They wanted to unify the mobile/touch and keyboard/mouse user interface into one package. The result is a rather strange 2-layered design that feels tacked-on and never quite does what you want. They would have been much better off with 2 seperate editions.

I'll certainly steer clear of it for now, even if it should bring any performance benefits.

Dejavu!

I'm extremely interested in Kontakt and Imperfect Samples. I won't consider it until I get a new Mac. (real computer)

Shows what I meant with the 2-layered design that doesn't quite do what you want. Certainly worth watching if you've never seen it in action.

When the Desktop mode is invoked, does that suspend the Metro stuff (including the processes associated with the tiles), or should the Metro interface be completely turned off for the best real time performance? Anyone looked into this closely?

I've installed it on mum's PC. I feel cruel. (and I'm glad I had a separate machine on the 'net so I could Google how to do stuff!) Nevertheless, I'm also considering taking up the upgrade option that's available here too. Gotta keep up.

Greg.
