Since the importance of memorized performance is a topic that arises from time to time in this forum, I thought some might find this recent article from the NYTimes website interesting:

Playing By Heart, With or Without a Score

(This is also being discussed in the Pianist Corner in this thread.)

Thanks, packa! That was an interesting article. If a pianist can manage the page turns unobtrusively, I can see no reason why he/she shouldn't be able to use the score when performing. But if the page turns are awkward, it affects the performance. And if the pianist has a page-turner standing there, I find that distracting as an audience member and would prefer not to have that distraction. but that's jmho.

I wonder if more modern technology will make playing solo works from scores more popular again. A lot of folk play scores that are scanned in on their iPads, and they can turn the pages with a bluetooth pedal. I'm not aware of any pros who use that sort of technology, but I imagine that it will only get better and more popular with time. Although you never know, some people don't like change of any sort. smile

Purely by coincidence, I also found this article online today:

More musicians going high-tech

I have previously seen references to the Borromeo Quartet's use of digital scores, but this is an interesting roundup of other examples. Of course, chamber groups and accompanists have long used scores when solo performers did not, but digital music stands are clearly beginning to emerge even for professional performance.

I really liked the article in the OP. Also there is a link within to a blog post by Stephen Hough on the pros and cons of using a score. His posts are always a good read.
