Hi, I'm interested in a Baldwin R from the year 2000. It's selling for around 9k from the 2nd owner. Is this a good deal? I'm going to be driving a few hours to look at it, and haven't really played any baldwins, but my kids' piano teacher loves them. I've played lots of steinways and schimmels, and am about to purchase a used Steinway M, but I still don't want to spend that much money on a piano. Anyway, do Baldwins last or are they considered to be inferior piano-shaped objects? Any and all info would be great! Thanks!

A Baldwin R in good condition is a very nice instrument. I'm not in the business but 9K for a 2000 Baldwin R (asumming good/excellent condition) sounds reasonable to me. Be sure to have an independent tech check out the instrument if you become serious in purchasing it. Good luck.

Sounds better than reasonable. I paid more than that for my 1989 Baldwin R (Walnut), and I thought that was a good deal. It was clearly the best piano I could get in my price range.

Some players like the Baldwin R better than the Steinway M (and Baldwins are certainly cheaper). Baldwins in 2000 were still American-made and serious quality instruments. Some years later (2008? someone here will know) production was shifted to Asia and now they aren't the same pianos. That change has tarnished the name, so the earlier, high-quality ones can be a real bargain.

Chopin, Waltz in E minor (op. posth.)
Schubert, Op. 90 no. 2
Mendelssohn, Op. 19 no. 2

The Baldwin R1 is a very fine instrument. Definately not in the PSO or POS category. That price is excellent if it gets and A-OK from a qualified piano tech. It is a different sound from an S&S-M and that gets to personal preference.

You may have discovered a great bargain.

Good Luck,

Marty in Minnesota

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

Baldwins have a good reputation, that is certainly true. I have always found Baldwins to be solidly built, but I have never found a living room sized one that I found had a paricularly musical voice. A solid workhorse perhaps, but missing the finesse, character and "cultivated-ness" that makes instruments inspiring.
