I promised you to remember the goals you set in december 2011.

Look and see what you realized.......have fun...

Your goals of dec 2011

I played this year many French Suites of Bach....many Sonatas of Haydn.....and thanks to Daria van den Bercken I play now every day Suites of Händel....so nice......

And no, there is no new dp purchased, but for the first time since many years I did four churchorgan performances.....
willibrorduschurch at kloosterburen
recordings at kloosterburen

What did you realize?

Cheers from the after-christmas-dinner,
Johan B

I didn't do too bad...at least made progress on all the things in last year's list. This year looks to be more of the same, pretty much.

Hi PW friends:
What I said last year:

"Happy 2012 to all of you!!!!

My goals are simple for the year.
-play for enjoyment
-enhance my tempo and expression
-select a repertoire (I've learned soooo many pieces) and polish it"

I've played in five piano parties (two were PW and three were my teacher's students). I enjoyed it a great deal. Tempo has doubled...still not always enough but much faster than last year. I've got five pieces that I can play when asked (a Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Chopin, and geez...who is that other composer) They are not long...1-4 pages each but it's a start.

AND now I've signed up for 2013 Summer keys in July. Whooohoooo.

Blessings to each of you this Christmas day.

This is a great thread! I guess I didn't notice it last year. Too bad, it would have been great to gauge my growth. Anyway, I hope most of you met or exceeded your goals. Responding as an active member seems to be a goal in and of itself. Happy New Year!

I made mine - I averaged more than 1.5 hrs/day of playing/practicing. I hope to do more this year.

Happy new year, all smile

Thanks, HalfStep. I'd like to practice a couple of hours a day, but what it gets me is more musicality. I'd really like to get more of the foundation harmony/chords/transitions/endings etc into a fluid vocabulary rather than just having everything memorized. It's coming smile

Hmm I'm embarrassed to admit that I accomplished none of my goal I set in 2012. I was working on the third movement of the Pathetique earlier in the year but I did not quite finish it. I started working on the duet piece but stopped some time this year. Its not that I was not doing anything but things did not happen as I imagined last year. Reorganization in my company, new responsibility, new piano teacher and new church. I can say positively 2012 was a year of change. My goal next year is to practice 2 hours a day when at home (600 hours a year). Perform at least four times in front of others (include piano party, studio class performance and summer keys).

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I think I'm finally ready to post.

I, too, want to practice more effectively in 2012. I need to discuss this more with my teacher. Also, I have committed to practicing every day.
It took me about 2 months to learn the Bach Minuet, so, being realistic, I want to learn a new piece every two months in 2012, too. This should include Linus and Lucy and some Schumann.

That's it.

p.s. I considered long and hard whether I would include recording something for the PW forum would be on this list, but listening to things you all have posted here has intimidated the he** out of me, so it didn't make it to the goal list. However, if I grow a spine, it may yet happen.

Because of injury (I'm having problems with my left wrist), I've struggled with piano for a big chunk of 2012. This makes me really sad. Having said that, until I was injured, I managed to practice daily except one day unexcused. I have kept up my lessons since the injury--we're just working on the right hand. But i've not stayed inspired to practice every day.

If I count one piece that I know only on RH, I did learn 6 new pieces in 2012, including two Schumann pieces. Three of the 6 were recorded for the piano bar. I didn't even try to learn Linus and Lucy. That would have been a bit ambitious even before the injury (unless i found an easy version).

I won't make any piano resolutions for 2013. Until I get my wrist sorted it doesn't make much sense. I am hoping to see a specialist in January (I have to get a referral and a translator first). That's a start at least. Until then, I'm a bit on the fence about whether to continue the lessons.

Best wishes to you MaryAnn! Just have your goal be to work on getting your wrist sorted.

My goal (as always) is to carry on with an open heart.
And eat more vegetables.

I wasn't here in December 2011 and didn't have any idea that I'd be starting piano. So this year's goals are just to still be here next year and to still be loving it.

I did pretty well on my 2012 goals. I am on track to complete 800 hours of practice in 2012, which is better than the 2 hours/day goal I set. I found a new teacher who has really helped me with playing more relaxed. She has really been working on my technique. Last January I was having pain in my forearms and ring fingers, and now I play pain free! I did not do the ABRSM exam, but I completed the technical requirements through grade 5 plus three pieces from each grade 4 and 5. I have more than 30 minutes of memorized repertoire I can sit down and play now. Considering I had nothing I could play from memory a year ago, I am really happy about that. So, overall it was a good piano year!

I set my goals as working through Piano Adventures 3A and 3B, and posting in the Piano Bar and the ABF Recital. I completed half of that: PA 3A and ABF recital. But I'm happy with what I've been doing instead, so no regrets at not completing those goals.

I think my goal was to not eat so much the next year at Christmas. I failed.

Oh, piano goals ... a little better everyday! Mostly that seems to happen. Onwards and upwards for 2013 too.

  • Debussy - Le Petit Nègre, L. 114
  • Haydn - Sonata in Gm, Hob. XVI/44

I think I also failed that one, Andy.

P.S. Happy Birthday!

I wasn't here last year and so my goals are similar to Toastie's. I'll add that I plan on delving further into all areas of music and piano study, though, including a heck of a lot more music theory (heads are gonna spin - namely mine); a more regimented learning of [mostly] level-appropriate classical repertoire and practicing sight-reading; and a lot more study into jazz and improvisation (as well as maybe a solo transcription or two!).
