Her little piece from the recital. She had fun and played through her errors. http://youtu.be/jzqdv2pAIv8

Ah, memories! Really very good for only 16 months on the bench!

Whatever camera you are using, the sound is quite clean and undistorted.

It's an 8 year old digital camera (Canon Elph) that takes video.

She loved the piece but struggled a little because there is no one on youtube who plays it so she had to "really learn" it vs listen and figure it out. But now she looks for the composer's pieces when looking at music books (Melody Bober).

Well, my son's teacher positively forbade him from looking around online for others' versions, until he had developed his own feeling for the piece. I had to fight my natural impulses to have him sit in front of all the "masters' versions." smile

She is a listener-learner. I think because she would pick out tunes by listening to them before she had lessons - it's the most natural (for her) way to play.

What's wrong with listening to other versions?

I agree! My 12 year old and I always root around on youtube for whatever he is working on. It's on ongoing joke that we won't watch the videos of the 4 year olds playing. LOL. Anyway, we both find it helpful and I don't find it hinders him at all when he's working creatively on a piece. In fact, his bigger problem would be sometimes he's over creatie.

Lovely recital video. smile My son was supposed to play tonight, but we all have the flu! He's finishing Mozart K330 right now.

She didn't believe he should expose himself to others' interpretations until he had thoroughly thought through the music on his own. Crafting your own interpretation is hard work. She argued that relying on recordings can easily become a crutch that prevents a student from ever learning how to think independently about a piece of music. Hers is not an uncommon viewpoint. She had no problem with hearing how others played a piece later on in the process, but only after working out one's own thoughts.

As I said, that was her view. People are free to do what they want, based on their own goals and their own learning styles. She does, however, have a very good pedagogical background and her training is at the highest level at Peabody, so her views aren't just chopped liver. smile
