Is there a chart somewhere that would help me to compare the various models and vendors? There are so many models that I have a hard time even knowing where to begin. I'm looking for things such as: Does a bigger number in the model name mean it's "higher" in their line? or just a newer version? Is there a way to tell from the model name/number how old it is? I sort of have a basic idea what features to look for but I don't have a way to figure out what models might have them.

I'm starting to look for a used digital but the huge number of models is pretty baffling to me.

Oongawa, the digital piano section of PianoBuyer.com offers a pretty good overview of the different manufacturers and models - this would by my starting point.

Regarding model numbers, usually the higher number equates to a higher specification, although there can also be differences across product ranges and generations.

If you have a specific budget or particular type of piano (portable or fixed console) in mind, I'm sure we can offer useful suggestions on what to be looking for.

Kind regards,
James

A chart would be nice, but we would all disagree on it.

The best way, if you can, is to hang out here for a few weeks or so in order to get a feel for that. Or alternately, you can read back over the last few weeks (or months) of history. When I was new to the forum, I went back and read the previous year or so (all the interesting threads, anyway). It took a while but it was fun and informative.

Thanks, I'll go back and read through some of the past threads.
I don't have an immediate need, what I was thinking I'd do is identify a couple of models that seemed like possibilities and just watch the local ads till one popped up.

I do have an acoustic with a practice pedal so I can be reasonably quiet. But use of headphones is mainly what I'm after, as well as being able to interact with a PC. Debating about trying synthesis or one of the other programs of that sort. My son does a lot of stuff with GarageBand so would be using that as well.

So, I don't need a lot of bells and whistles but good action is important, and I want 88 keys.

I'd describe my present level as 'early intermediate' player. That's just a guess, never took any tests.

Read some posts here, find the model you are reading about on YouTube - if you have a couple of good headphones, you can get some understanding how these models sound.
Then you can check prices in the 'Prices paid' thread, and you are ready to go to the shop and make some meaningful choice.

Alternatively, you can start your shopping and later check prices and reviews on different models here smile

Higher model number may just mean next generation, or higher model, if they have the same letters before the model number, e.g. CA-, CLP, HP etc.
