I never knew either.

And really I still don't. ha

That was the main thing I didn't get after the first description (because it made me think I wasn't understanding what it was).

I've always found the spider count interesting. When I google on a topic being discussed here, google's spiders have almost always been here already to index the discussion. No doubt there are also spiders seeking email addresses to spam.

If you look at the list of spiders (also found in the who's online section) they are all search engine spiders.

They are primarily indexing the threads, but if you have an email address plainly listed in a thread it could well get indexed. If it's only in your profile, they won't get it.

Last time I checked, Google had over 2,600,000 pages indexed for Piano World overall.

Huh -- so, the specific spiders show up?

Where?
(I looked, and didn't find -- including on "Who's Online.")

edit: Aha -- at the bottom of the Who's Online page.
I never looked down that far. smile

Yes, at the bottom of the Who's Online List, it lists the spiders, and what they were "reading"

I wonder if it is not a bit too intrusive though... The list even specifies when people are viewing private messages, although it doesn't say from whom... Still...

??
I really don't see anything intrusive about it.

If it showed to whom you were writing or receiving from .. that would be different. So what if someone is writing or reading a private message? As long as you can't see the contents, I can't see that it matters at all.

It is a public forum - what you do is public. What you read or write may be private.

On both the guitar and the flute board I visit one can hide one's online status, and many appreciate that feature.

Actually I'm using google for searching PW pages quite often. Seems to work better than searching here: search here on PW usually gives only last results, and it does not "AND" but "OR" the results which is not so useful.
