So, I've been given the opportunity to buy a relatively little played 1986 Steinway model M that is in fabulous condition (supposedly) from far away for $18,500 or to buy a local 2001 Model M that has been used as a rental from a dealer for about 22k. I played the 2001 model and it was ok. I was in a room that was TERRIBLE acoustically. The dealer offered to take it to a better room, but I'm wondering if I should hold out for a bigger piano (my living room could handle a 6 foot) that is around the same budget price, go faraway to play a model M that might not work (and ship it, etc.), or try this rental piano in a different room? Do rental pianos really take a beating? They say it only went out about 4 times a year as most people preferred the much larger pianos. Thanks so much for your help!

I wouldn't even consider the piano that's far away unless you really don't mind going to see it and having a tech look at it also. Actually I think you should pay to have a tech look at it first if it's more than an hour away. The claim about it's condition is meaningless. The other piano you can play and have a tech examine for its condition. If the piano was rented four times a year for 11 years it made quite a few trips but I don't think any definite conclusion about its condition can be made without an inspection.

One thing about buying a piano from far away is that sometimes the seller is more than happy and very interested in selling it off to a far away place, for good reasons. Buyer beware and use due diligence.

Greetings,
Most pianos I see that are over 6 foot, and in the home, are played completely closed up, because of excessive volume. I even voice pianos down below optimum and they are still too much piano for the space. An M makes plenty of sound, but if you have to have the bigger bass, you will pay for voicing along the way.
Regards,
