Hi,

I have to choose a piece for my Berklee Piano Audition in January.

I will play a piece from Chopin but I dont know which piece fits well for the audition.

Here is the Information they gave me for the piece selection:

Berklee embraces and values all music styles so you should prepare a piece that you are comfortable with and displays your strengths as a musician. It should be approximately 3-5 minutes in length, in any style, which demonstrates your instrumental proficiency and your overall musicianship.

They are looking for musicianship so I decided not to play virtuosic piece.

I can play Étude Op. 10, No. 4 but I dont want to show off besides I'm not comfy enough with this piece.

And I decided not to play any mazurka because they are too short.

What would you suggest?

For now, I'm thinking to play:

Étude Op. 25, No. 7 or Nocturne Op. 55, No. 2

I have only 3 weeks to practice.

Besides that I want to acquire scholarship. So I need to be very assertive.

I'm open to any suggestions.

I have a friend there now. She auditioned with the first mvt of a Beethoven sonata.

The best advice I can give, is that with 3 weeks to go, I wouldn't pick something new. I would pick something tried and true that you can play with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back. What do you have in that category?

Auditions are done on acoustic pianos? Can you ask this to your friend for me please.

Mazurka Op. 17, No. 4 ( which has a jazzy sound maybe that piece can impress them ? And 4 minutes long )

Waltz Op. 69, No. 1 ( which has a jazzy sound too, but It is too simple technically )

Waltz Op. 64, No. 2

Waltz Op. 70, No. 3

Waltz Op. 70, No. 2

Mazurka Op. 17, No. 2

and Andante Spianato

Are we speaking (writing) of the Berklee in Boston, or the Berklee in California? These are completely (COMPLETELY) different schools!

Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Berklee in Boston is a great school, although they have more recently been diluting their conservatory programs in an attempt to diversify.

I would contact, perhaps through a Private Message, Dave Frank who posts frequently over on the Non-Classical Pianist Forum. He was a professor at Berklee, and is an all-around very helpful gentleman. He should be able to give you some first-hand advice.

If you have trouble contacting Dave, just let me know. Do you have jazz playing experience, by any chance?

If you mean the University of California at Berkeley, their music department does not have a performance program.

Oh, that would be great If I can talk with him. But I dont want to waste his time, thank you for your interest. I play Jazz very rarely. I have a little bit Jazz knowledge. I'm passionate about any music genre. I will attend to Composition Department of Berklee If I can pass the audition. Also I'm working on standard I-IV-V blues progression ( cause they will ask at audition )
