Hi guys,

I am about to commit buying a used steinway. It has minor scratches here and there. Does someone know the repair cost for it? Do technicians charge by the number of locations of scratches? What is the average cost?

Thanks,
Peng

Don't get a technician, get a person who specializes in touching up piano finishes. I think most will charge you by the hours they spend although they may have a minimum charge to come over. As is most always the case, it pays to pay a little more to get the best person you can find. I'd ask some techs or dealers you trust for recommendations. I'd guess you'd pay $60-$140 per hour but the PW dealers and techs may have a better estimate. If you post your location some PW members may have people they can recommend.

Actually, there is nothing unique about a piano finish. Check around for experts in general furniture repair and refinishing. This is a situation where Angie's List could be useful.

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.
