Hi

I live in London, UK, and have been searching for a new digital piano recently - in fact I have made a couple of posts here, detailing my opinions of different instruments. I have been looking for the most faithful simulation of a grand piano, and have decided to take the plunge, and buy a Yamaha N1.

I have looked online at several UK retailers (nationwide), but they all seem to quote exactly the same price - £5605. Then I looked on the "DIGITAL PIANO PRICES PAID" thread here, and saw that someone in Turkey had bought an N1 for €5250, which converted into pounds is £4258

Now I'm not suggesting that the price is likely to be the same in the UK as in Turkey, but that does seem rather a large discrepancy. Why are all the UK shops charging exactly the same price - is it an official thing, or just a matter of haggling?

Thanks for any advice, (and thanks also for reading my stupid review posts of the pianos I tried) smile

Matt

Laws in different countries vary regarding structured pricing models set by manufacturers but the consistent price is a MAP figure and the way around that is talking to salespeople. That is an expensive item. You are relatively rare as a serious buyer. You might come away with a good price if you take some time doing homework and visiting more than one store talking to salespeople or owners.

If the dealer you speak with won't budge on the price try and negotiate the warranty and a bench; delivery and set up should be included in the price though.

Here in the Netherlands my N3 came with a standard two year warranty (in the US it's five years) and I paid extra for an additional three year warranty.

Unfortunately you'll probably have to show up in person to get the best price.

I should add that here in the Netherlands the N1 is being sold by regular music stores and not just the stores that sell Yamaha acoustic grands.

Yamaha in the UK will only let their retailers (online or otherwise) advertise prices representing a limited discount (usually no more than 10% - which is why advertised prices are so similar). To get the best deal you need to get off your arse and speak face-to-face with dealers. I promise you several hundred quid will tumble from the price. Just remember that these poor dealers do have to make a profit though!

Good luck,

Steve

+1 to this. Although Yamaha can't legally make shops stick to their recommended price, shops which deviated face the risk of losing future Yamaha business.

What many shops will do is offer extras such as a bench, headphones, music and so on, but if you talk to them face to face, as EssBrace says you may get a discount, but even then not much (but 5% of £x000 is not to be sneezed at.

Hey guys

Thanks a lot for your helpful replies, I wasn't aware of minimum advertised pricing, it certainly makes what I see more understandable.

Cheers

Matt
