A North Atlantic Island former...
Last week I enquired about sourcing a lid prop for an upright piano (with split lid). The result has me heading down DIY Avenue, albeit with the bare minimum of talent, and so far I have tried two 'ingenious' blush designs of my own that were--how should I put?--'less than successful' ... eek

To aid my (ad)venture(s), I was wondering if anybody with an upright piano (with lid props) would be willing to post a photo or two of their particular lid prop so that I could identify a design and try to emulate it via sourcing the constituent parts from a hardware shop?

With thanks in advance,

P.

Thanks Guapo. I'll also need some kind of hinge, flange and/or stop for that, plus bushings and proper (brass) screws, and it is on these small details that my oh-so-clever 'experiments' have all come undone. Hence, the request for a full design to copy.

I think you misunderstand the mounting of the part Guapo's image shows. You simply put a screw with a washer thru the part and into the inside of the sideboard of the piano. A 1/4" #8 screw should do.

Takes less than a minute and we've done it dozens of times.

Thanks, Steve. Like I said, I'm somewhat 'challenged' in the DIY department. But won't I need some kind of stop or rest for the prop to maintain it in the upright position and to keep it horizontal at rest? Something like in this photo: lid prop with rest??

Jamming it between the piano's body and the lid will hold it up. A screw can be used to keep it in place when it is down. Or you could just cut a notch in a stick at one end, and place it between the front board of the piano and the lid when you want to use it, and put it away somewhere when you want the piano closed.

Thanks Guapo, Steve, BDB. I've been in touch with the indicated seller and they will supply felt bushings and screws if only I can add something else to raise the bill to the $20 minimum.

With thanks,

P.
