I have been getting more and more calls from folks trying to give away pianos. It is hard to tell them the sad news that there is no humane society for unwanted pianos. Is this happening all over?

Yea, it's picking up a bit. I just suggest Craigs List as I silently think of the road flare treatment and try to get off the phone gracefully. grin

Pretty much - yes....

However, unless the "road flare ready" piano has been stored outside in the rain, they're a very good source of seasoned wood. I recently made a new desk centre for one of my grands from the mahogany core taken out of the top of an old upright.

And this inspired me to use offcuts, and reclaimed wood to make all sorts of jigs and tools for the workshop, and new piano parts too of course (hammer rail from an old Blüthner recently became a prop stick for another Blüthner!) - the old pianos live on! smile

Started work at the Blthner piano re-building workshop in Perivale, UK, in 1989. Self employed since 2000. Learning something new about pianos every day... smile

If they are going to get hauled to a landfill its a good oportunity to salvage some parts from them. if yournot too busy, offer them a bit of money to offset the moving costs and then strip the ivories, pedals (if they are nice), nice ornamental parts like plated action nuts ect...

Actually, there IS a kind of "humane society for unwanted pianos." There's the Piano Adoption website where someone wishing to give away a piano can list it by state, for others to see and hopefully rehome.

It's not like there's a warehouse somewhere where you can drop one off for adoption, but it is an option.

Cool site. Unfortunately under the list of American states they have Free Pianos Canada and Free Pianos UK, but they don't have Free Pianos Australia yet (I don't need one, but I am sure there are Aussie students who do need one). I think it would be nice if Australia joined this project too. smile

ChopinAddict, I wonder if you could contact the people who maintain that website and ask them to add Australia?

I notice that Europe isn't represented either, but maybe there's cross-border or delivery problem issues that would make that unfeasable?

OK, I told them that their site has been mentioned here and we thought it would be a good idea to add Australia. I guess they will have to find some free pianos first though... smile
