I have a high school auditorium with a Steinway grand that has a broken damper pedal.

All I have found are complete pedal sets ready to install in the lyre.

This is likely a dumb question, but can just a damper pedal be obtained, or is the complete set the only way to go?

Is the pedal made out a material that a good welder could repair it?

You know how schools are with budgets.

Steinway sells the pedals individually.

Pedals can also be welded or brazed. If there is a zero budget, then exchange the broken sustain pedal with the middle (sostenuto) pedal.

If the high school has a good shop program; you might also consider having them align the two broken bits of pedal, lay a piece of steel across the break, drill a couple holes on each side, and thread the steel for bolts. Literally lashing it together. Or through and through with the bolts, and washers/locknuts.

Depends on the space available in the lyre, and the pedal, of course. The style of pedal with the half-round casting under the pedal is where this works best. Or along the flat top-side where there is room. You may need to remove some felt from the space where the pedal fits in the lyre, too. To keep the pedals level with each other.

Ditto for the attempt on welding/brazing; add something to bridge the gap, if possible. It will be stronger in the long run. I will comment that many pedals can't be successfully welded; the cruddy alloys or pot-metal won't take to the process. But, it is a cheaper alternative, and worth a try on a budget!

If you can find a tradesman in your area that uses interlock (TM) to repair cylinder heads, engine blocks and marine castings they will have the expertise to braze any type of pot metal.

The time that you spend finding someone to repair it could probably better be spent doing something else. Just order a new pedal. If you have been in business for 30 years, you should have an account with Steinway already.

Never set up an account with Steinway. I see so few in my neck of the woods that it's a pleasant surprise to get to work on one.

I had already planned to take my heavy drill and a piece of metal to see if there was room to tie it together as was suggested.

I have since found a place in the town I will be in that thinks he can braze it back together.

So we'll see how it works out.

I suspect that if you called Schaff or someplace that has the pedal assembly, they could get you the individual pedal.

You can call Steinway and talk with them and order the pedal with a debit or credit card.... Pretty easy to do. Serial number, model number....

Replacement on a Steinway would be my preferred method.

I'll get the numbers and give them a call.
