I recently saw the movie the Piano Teacher (we won't get into a discussion of the non-musical merits of the film) and would like to identify a piece heard in the movie. It is played by Erika's student/lover, Walter during a lesson in the latter half of the movie and I believe it is probably a Schubert waltz. I've never been a big Schubert fan but found this piece quite appealing. Can anyone identify it for me?

Haven't seen it in a while, but I do remember him playing the Scherzo from Schubert's A major Sonata, D. 959.

Yes - he does play that earlier in the movie at a recital. The one I'm trying to identify happens later on when he is alone with the teacher at a lesson. It is in a minor key, and I'm sure it's one of the waltzes.

If I remember he also plays the second movement from the same sonata.

I undoubtedly have the Waltz you are looking for in my supposedly complete collection of Schubert Dances. Unfortunately, however, I have not seen the movie, and going through the 164 Waltzes Schubert composed (under different titles) to isolate those in minor keys would be quite a challenge without further clues to the work.

That said, the credits for music in the film list the Schubert Sonata in A major, D.959, and the Piano Trio in E-flat, D.929.

The soundtrack CD La Pianiste
lists only those two works by Schubert, as well.

Regards,

BruceD

I re-watched the scene in question and now believe it could be a piano transcription of one of the Winterreise songs, the vocal version of which was featured earlier in the movie. I found the CD soundtrack on Amazon which lists all of the tracks and there is a reference to a piano version of Der sturmische morgen. But I don't think it is a Liszt transcription. Did Schubert write piano transcriptions of his own lieder?

I watched the movie again. This is the only scene I could find with Walter getting a lesson from Erika. The music is the slow movement (Andantino) from the Sonata in A major, D. 959.

Here is the clip:

Yes, the andantino from 959 it is, the saddest piece of music ever written, in my opinion.

And the following movement, the scherzo, is one of the happiest.

Thank you all! While I'm not a big Schubert fan, that one merits a place on my things to learn one day list.
